A great band out of San Francisco, California, Hazzard's Cure are a fairly new band that are playing regularly throughout the West Coast. featuring members of Owl, Hotblack Desiato, Acts Of Sedition, Etc., Hazzard's Cure only focus on the essentials: Weed, Beer, and Metal. that should be enough for you to get interested. "Hazzard's Cure" was recorded by the almighty Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios and released through Lummox Records in 2011 and is easily one of the best albums of the year. really liked all of the songs on this album, they flowed together well and kept me guessing as to what was coming next. "Meet Me At The Mountain" and "Tossed and Dethroned" stood out the most. really like when bands can use blast beats effectively and still maintain whatever sound they are creating. now that is fucking essential. guitars are fucking supreme without a doubt. another great bay area band, Hazzard's Cure are continually proving to be one of the best. live shows are always sweet, the place is always rockin' to the jams brought forth. do not miss your chance to see them. you can preview or purchase their new full length album through their Bandcamp page.

Side I features three crushing tracks of doom, while Side II contains the Chopped and Screwed versions of the three, mixed by Dj Dreemz. Doom-laden, Psychedelic rock that captures the listener, entrancing them in a haze of thick drone, and then sending them on a ride towards the infinite. Apocryphon is a Psychedelic Death Metal/Grind band from San Francisco, California. Shelby, who runs Illogical Contraption, plays guitar for Apocryphon. Apocryphon started in October of 2010 and have been playing shows around the Bay Area since then. their 2011 EP is their first album and it is amazing. Apocryphon does not disappoint. from start to finish, the album is consistently obliterating your soul while engulfing it into an abyss. the EP was recorded with Jeff Davis (Jef Leppard) over at Lennon Studios. you can pick this album up for download at their Bandcamp page. Contagium is a stench/crust band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Contagium has been around since May of 2008 and have extensively toured the better part of North America and Canada. i've been able to hang out with them a few times during their last couple tours in North America. they are some of the nicest people i've been able to meet. Contagium creates a soundtrack to the aftermath. this tour tape is unbelievably awesome. fucking all-out crust destruction. it is easily one of the best crust albums i have heard this year. the tape will be available on their 2011 Cross-Canadian tour starting August 7th. for more information on Contagium, you can check out their website. The Demonstration

Pharaoh is a Doom Metal/Sludge band from New Jersey. since 2009, Pharaoh have been playing and touring throughout the East Coast and Southern United States. Whipstirker is a Metal/Punk band from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Whipstriker combines everything you would hope for in a raw, thrashy, Metal/Punk band. À Porta, A Guerra Civil effectively focuses on the aggressiveness of Anti Cimex while still retaining the sheer speed and intensity of Motorhead ripping off your fucking face. their vocalist, Victor, says the new cassette is sung in Portuguese and mainly talks about civil war in Rio De Janeiro. this cassette is definitely something to pick up.

Lycus

Lycus is a heavy Doom Metal band from San Francisco, California. although this post is about the new formation, Lycus originally started in the fall of 2008 in Sacramento, California by Trevor Deschryver, Jackson Heath, and Bret Tariff. Deschryver, Heath, and Tariff were the main writers for the first material that was released in early 2009. these first recordings were phenomenal. i was so taken back from getting my ears crushed by some heavy doom. not too many bands have captured a sound so immense than Lycus has. Deschryver and Heath, now living in the bay area, have since gone on to join other projects such as Deafheaven and Temple Of Saturn. Tariff also plays in a brutal, blistering Black Metal band called Minenwerfer that i actually had the opportunity of playing with back in January. recently, a full lineup was formed once again and Lycus returned to the studio to release a new demo. this demo was released this year and was recorded with Greg over at Earhammer. i've enjoyed everything released by Lycus so far. they are a really promising new bay area band. Lycus will possibly be releasing this demo at an August 5th show with Swamp Witch, Bruxers, Badr Vogu, and Connoisseur. more info will be announced for what has been quoted as "The heaviest show of the year" soon. the demo can be picked up at their Bandcamp page.

Astral Rebirth is a Black Metal band from Mexico City, Mexico. their newest demo, The Axis Of The Utter Black Ocean, is a really great release. Astral Rebirth is comprised of two key members, "Oblivion" and "Aneurysm". together they create a sound that overcomes the mind with a dark void that swallows thought processes and shows the listener what truly is considered as "Atmospheric" Black Metal. lets start off the new year right... Mortuous is a new Doom/Death Metal band from San Jose, California. Mortuous was started in 2009 by Colin Tarvin. Colin recorded, mixed, and played all the instruments on this demo. this is one of the best tapes to come out in a long time. fucking monumental. the demo was released on February 5th, 2010 by Brandon of Skeleton Plague Records. this demo is now out of print. i know it was repressed by Skeleton Plague but the label is no longer running at this moment. i also know copies are floating around on the web so if you want a copy you'll have to look around. Colin also recruited an awesome group of dudes to make this a full band. Al Tarvin-Kibler of Bruxers on Vocals, Nick Scarboro on Bass, and Col Jones and Mike Beams of Exhumed provide drums, vocals, and guitar.

Mortuous is playing all through February in the Bay Area so check them out at the following shows:

The Tenth And Final Installment of A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991

1989 was the year. Austria was the place. Psychedelic gore-warriors Pungent Stench and Disharmonic Orchestra were the guilty parties. This is some of the most sophisticated and progressive death metal to be found at the time, coming from two bands destined to do great things. Although the Stench continued on a more humorous, "rot 'n' roll" tangent with their music, the Orchestra eventually went a little more "experimental", basically turning into a "sweater prog" by the late 90's. Oh well.
It doesn't get any better than this little split album right here. If you like what you hear, get Disharmonic's 1990 follow-up Expositionsprophylaxe here and/or Pungent Stench's 1991 classic Been Caught Buttering right here. Epic.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 9

Not to be confused with THIS Sorcery (although they rule in a different, more wizard-centric way), Sorcery FROM SWEDEN (not to be confused with SORCEROR from Sweden) were another crucial element in the early development of the death metal scene in that country. Forming in 1986 and producing their first demo The Arrival in '87, Sorcery dropped these two gems on the metal-hungry public in '88 and '89, Ancient Creation and Unholy Crusade. The band didn't last long, though, releasing only the Rivers of the Dead EP in 1990 and the full-length Bloodchilling Tales in 1991 before splitting up and hence missing their chance to ride a wave of international popularity a la their countrymen Entombed and Unleashed. Oh well, I guess it was for the best. Some of the guys went on to form the doom metal band Outremer in the 00's (meh), and Sorcery actually re-formed just last year to release a new demo. I haven't heard it.

I shouldn't have to tell you much about Extreme Noise Terror. They've been around fucking FOREVER, and keep a busy international tour schedule to this day. Pioneers of the high/low dual-vocalist approach, ENT were accomplices to bands like Electro Hippies and Napalm Death in the formation of the early British grindcore scene. Pretty standard stuff. But how about that time ENT performed at the British version of the Grammys with their countrymen KLF -- and started firing blanks from an AK47 at the crowd? Now that takes fucking BALLS. Fortunately, Extreme Noise Terror has no shortage of sack.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 7

More ancient death metal goodness, this time from Xecutioner, who were an early incarnation of Obituary. I guess you know what to expect. These are the Tardy brothers, after all.
Contained herein are five songs, two from their 1986 demo and three from their 1987 demo. The song "Like The Dead" is featured on both, with the '87 version containing an almost minute-long false start. For some reason, the '86 demo sounds WAY better, in fact those two songs ended up on the completely amazing Raging Death compilation a little while later. These tapes provide great documentation of the "birth" of Floridian death metal as it were, the first painful mutations of thrash metal as it twisted, decayed, and become something uglier, meaner, and infinitely more awesome.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 6

Not to break with the 'Month of Crust' theme or anything, but I wanted to share another buried gem with you all, namely Rottrevore's 1990 demo The Epitome of Pantalgia. What is "Pantalgia", you ask? Good question. Dictionary.com defines it simply as "Pain involving the entire body", which is a pretty apt summation of the overall sickness and brutality these Pittsburgh, Pennsylvanians dealt out. Killer early death metal with an ear for doomy hooks and nearly subsonic vocals, played by dirtbag bros who worked at gas stations. Fuck yeah.
These guys didn't last long, with Pantalgia being one of three demo/EP releases that they put out before their one and only full-length masterpiece, Iniquitous ('93 - Look for that one on IllCon soon). One thing that set Rottrevore apart from other early DM bands was their tendency for socio-political lyrics, which I guess might even qualify them as an early crust band. So maybe I'm not fucking up Crust Month after all.

NIHILIST - Only Shreds Remain Demo, 1989

NIHILIST - Drowned Demo, 1989

These guys were the forerunners of legendary death-metal-turned-boring-heavy-rock band Entombed. No discussion about early Swedish death metal would be complete without Nihilist. These guys had the sound, the look, the atmosphere, the morbid song names, the whole deal before almost anyone else.
Their first demo, entitled Premature Autopsy, was released in 1988, although I haven't included it here due to (what I think is) far inferior sound quality. Don't get me wrong, Only Shreds Remain and Drowned are far from studio perfection as well, I just find them a bit more listenable. A link to purchase the complete collection of Nihilist demos can be found HERE. These guys only existed for two years ('87-'89), but their influence on the world of death metal is immeasurable. Too bad Entombed got so shitty in their later years.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 4

Master is the long-lived and oft-neglected project of one Paul Speckmann, a death metal pioneer from Chicago who ditched out on the American scene to go melt faces in the Czech Republic back in the 90's. Speckmann was playing metal as far back as 1982, rocking bass for for the doomy War Cry and the short-lived Death Strike before going on to front Master. In fact, Paul has played in a bevy of bands since the creation of Master in 1983 (Abomination, Funeral Bitch, Krabathor), but Master has always remained as his main squeeze. Due to messy contractual issues and a constant flux of members, Master never managed to release an album in the 80's, with their first release being a self-titled affair put out by Nuclear Blast in 1990.
Luckily, Displeased Records unearthed this previously-forgotten gem in 2008, a collection of Master demo recordings from 1985. Long story short, this shit KILLS, and is some of the earliest "death metal" ever put on tape. But doesn't the very act of "releasing" an album disqualify it as being "unreleased"? I'm just sayin'.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 3

S.O.B. doesn't stand for "son of a bitch". It stands for Sabotage Organized Barbarian, an early Japanese skatethrash band that veered into some pretty nasty grindcore territory as their career progressed. Don't Be Swindle was their first full-length ("full-length" for S.O.B. = 15 minutes) album, released all the way back in 1987. And the title is no typo. That's part of the fun with these guys, their good-natured but clumsy use of the English language. Take a listen to "Let's Go Beach" or "Look Like Devil" for further proof.
These guys are still together, but basically "sold out" and went all Hot Topic in the 90's after their original singer offed himself by jumping in front of a train. But you can't fuck with their old shit (see also: the Leave Me Alone EP). These guys also recorded with John Peel at one point and recorded a split album with Napalm Death in 1989 (see last post). Epic recordings from the pioneers of grindcore. After the release of their mission statement Scum in 1987, Napalm Death teamed up with straight-laced BBC DJ John Peel for an installment in his ongoing "Peel Sessions" series. These are basically a lot of the same songs from Scum re-recorded with much better production, still retaining the grit and anger of the originals. Short, fast, angry fucking songs. Unfortunately, John Peel died back in 2004. But as I'm sure you all know, Napalm Death is still very much alive and kicking (ass).
The Peel Sessions has been released in at least four different versions over the years, the first being a short EP released in '87. That one was followed by an '89 version that included another batch of songs recorded in '88. Then came the 1991 version, which had yet a third batch of songs (from a much more "death metal"-sounding Napalm Death) tacked on. The whole mess was repackaged in 1993 on The Complete BBC One Recordings, but I went ahead and uploaded the simple, 26-song 1989 version.
If you dig Scum/Peel Sessions ND, make sure you check out Sore Throat as well. And don't forget Siege.

A Guest Series on Death Metal and Grindcore, pre-1991, Part 1

Greetings Hell Crust readers, Cobras here from Illogical Contraption stopping over for the first in what will eventually be several posts focusing on the early days of death metal, grindcore, crust, and doom. I know Mr. Crust himself is particularly fond of modern grind/metal, so I figured why not take some time to focus on the foundations of said music?
Today's album is the first full-length effort from the Bay Area's own Autopsy, who released this sick little platter of sadistic doomy death all the way back in 1989. At the time, they were one of the only death metal bands in San Francisco, apart from maybe Possessed (although I don't think Possessed were technically "death metal", I think people just say that because they had a song titled "Death Metal"... But whatever). Autopsy broke up in 1995, at which point several of the dudes went on to form the also-excellent Abscess. At present, Autopsy have re-formed and are scheduled to play the 2010 Maryland Deathfest.
This album fucking rips, and stands as proof that there was some killer shit going down on the left coast before the whole Morbid Angel/Deicide/Cannibal Corpse thing blew up down in Florida. Prepare to have your face melted.
